PERSONALITY
Riley is a very complex individual. Given his age, that shouldn't come as a shock. He has conflicting sides of his personality, depending on his mood. Sometimes he can be very charismatic, passionate and lively. Other times, he is very morose, broody and withdrawn. He wouldn't necessarily be classed as bi-polar, but rather, he has a pretty severe case of depression and with no medicinal aid to keep it under control he has to just deal with it when it flares.
Riley disguises his fears, pain, and depression behind his charming smile, infectious laugh, and fun-loving attitude. Being a bartender, he is social and will talk to anyone about anything as long as it isn't personal about himself. He's been burned too many times to 'go there' with anyone he doesn't trust. It's just easier to keep things light and on a surface level than to try to go any deeper. He'd rather listen to someone else than talk about himself.
Riley was diagnosed eight years ago with clinical depression. He'd been battling it longer than that; centuries, actually, but that was when he finally sought professional help for it. Unfortunately, human medicine doesn't have any effect on him. He didn't expect results; he just wanted answers at the time. Abandonment issues have always been high up on what triggers his depression. Every person Riley has ever cared about has died. Over the span of two and a half, almost two and three quarter centuries, Riley has lost so much. His eternal life is cursed, and there have been several times he's nearly stepped out into the sunlight just to end it all. He's not really sure what keeps stopping him, really. If asked, he'd have no answer. For some reason, he just keeps trudging on.
That said, when he is happy, he's very fun to be around and people want to get to know him. The side of Riley who existed before he was bitten by his Sire doesn't surface often, but when it does those who see it are gifted with a very beautiful man with a loving heart and sensitive demeanor who has the capacity to love and care deeply for others.

ABILITIES & SKILLS
Heightened Senses
All of Riley's basic senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing) are much more sensitive than that of a human. He can hear things from great distances, see not only from very far away, but in much higher detail. His skin is hypersensitive to touch.
Speed
Running at vampiric speed is far higher than speeds that can be reached by humans or animals. This isn't something he demonstrates often, as it would be terribly obvious and not a good way to blend in.
Glamour
The ability to charm a human into obeying what he says, or more specifically, to allow Riley to feed on their blood. It also gives him the ability to wipe a human's memory. This is also something he does not do. He wasn't given a choice when it came to being changed; he'd never take away the free will of another. The only times he's done it is to obtain work, or a place to stay when he's gotten desperate to stay out of the sun.

HUMAN LIFE
Riley was born in the mid-eighteenth century in Suffolk, England. He was oldest boy and second of four children born to Johnathan and Katherine Carrington. The family was not rich, but they had a house big enough for the six of them to live in and a little bit of property. All four children were educated and literate. Riley and his brother James helped their father with whatever needed to be done on the property or to sell items at the market, while his sisters Alice and Lydia helped their mother around the house with cooking, sewing, and cleaning.
The Carrington family was close knit, but Riley had always been different. Whenever his parents talked of marriage for him, Riley shied away. He knew he needed to settle down, find a wife and have children because that was the way the world worked but the idea of marrying a woman had never felt right to him. He didn't understand why, until a chance encounter gave him insight into what was going on with him. When Riley wasn't busy at home, he often went on walks to find a quiet place to write. Sometimes he wrote stories, other times he just wrote down his thoughts. And it was during a session of self-reflection that he was come upon by a young man about his age (nineteen). Riley had seen him in town before; he sold trinkets with an old woman. His name was Thomas. As they talked, Riley noticed how much he found himself looking into his eyes, how drawn he was to the sound of his voice, how much he wanted to just keep talking so that they didn't have to part ways. They talked for hours, about everything and nothing, and were drawn more and more together until finally, they kissed. Riley had never kissed anyone before, and he knew how wrong it was in the eyes of God but he just couldn't find himself to care. It felt good; for the first time he felt like he was really being true to himself.
For the next few months, Riley and Thomas met in secret. Kissing escalated into more; so much more. Riley was happy, but he knew everything was going to come crashing down on him, and sure enough, it did. Riley's brother followed him one day to see where his brother was running off to so often. He ended up catching two young men in the midst of a rather passionate exchange. James burst in on them and threatened Thomas within an inch of his life to stay away from his brother. In turn, he threatened Riley that their whole family would be put to shame and would burn in Hell for his sins. He promised not to tell their parents and not to kill Thomas only if Riley never saw him again. Feeling he had no choice, Riley did as he was told.
With seemingly no other option, Riley fell into the pattern his family wanted for him. He met a young woman at church, Jane, who for all intents and purposes was a very beautiful and loving woman. Riley courted her for a number of months, and married her by the time he was twenty and she was eighteen. They were granted a house and small amount of land for their wedding gift from their parents, where they were able to start a family. It wasn't easy, though. Riley found it... difficult to be a proper lover to his wife. It was only when he closed his eyes and thought of Thomas that he could make love to her, but that always worked. Over time, Riley did learn to love Jane. He wasn't necessarily happy, but he made it seem like he was. The couple managed to produce three children; one son and two daughters: Edward [Teddy] (1770), Margaret [Maggie] (1771), and Elizabeth [Lizzie] (1773).
By the year 1775, England was going to war with the American Colonies in what would become the American Revolutionary War. Riley did not initially join the cause. His brother James volunteered right away, and passed away after just four months in service. It wasn't until 1777 that Riley ended up offering his services to the British army, and that was only because the family had fallen on hard times financially and Riley knew they'd get his pension while he was gone. It would keep a steady flow of money coming to the family and Jane could keep up the house. Leaving his children was the hardest thing Riley ever did, and even Jane, whom he did love even if he knew she wasn't who he'd wanted to be with.
Fighting a war wasn't something Riley was meant to do. His brother had been more the fighter of the family. Riley was more sensitive, an artist with words, not weapons. He did as he was told, always reminding himself that he was doing this for his family. He wrote to Jane every chance he could, with notes to their children as well. Sometimes he'd write and send three or four letters at a time depending on how long it was in between post services. In fact, the last morning of his human life he'd sent letters to Jane, their children, his parents and his sisters. His sister Alice's husband George was serving in the same unit as Riley, which was a bit of a comfort. At least, until they were ambushed by colonists.
Among the men in his unit, Riley, George, and three other men were able to escape with their lives; momentarily, anyway. As they were running away, Riley looked back just in time to see rifles aimed at them. He shoved George out of the way and took two bullets in the back. Immediately he went down, only to have two colonists turn him over and shove a knife through his belly. Riley never knew if the other men got away while he lay bleeding to death on the ground. All he could think about were his children's faces, how he'd never see them again. He prayed they'd one day forgive him, that Jane would forgive him too. Just as he was starting to pass out, he heard the sounds of men screaming, and was convinced they were the lost souls of the damned greeting him as he descended to Hell -- just as his brother James told him he would from his time with Thomas.

VAMPIRE LIFE
When Riley woke, he was not standing at the gates of Hell. Rather, he was lying on his back on the floor of a dark room. There was a man in the room, who looked a bit older than Riley, but somehow ageless at the same time. He was beautiful; his features like the porcelain dolls Maggie and Lizzie had back home. Riley was confused; surely he'd died, so what happened? When he tried to move, he felt like he was going to be sick and as though his limbs were too heavy to lift. The man, Dorian, was suddenly next to him. Riley had no idea how he'd moved so fast. Dorian explained to him that he'd found Riley and brought him to his home. He told him he was a vampire, and that he'd potentially saved Riley's life. He said that he'd bitten Riley and drained him of his blood, then fed him some of his own blood and forced him to swallow it. But in order for Riley to survive, he had to feed on human blood. Immediately the thought repulsed Riley. He knew of vampires, how they were abominations to God and seen as demons. But Dorian had a hold over Riley, and he convinced him that if he ever wanted to see his wife and children again that this was the only way. Riley had to believe that Jane loved him enough to understand, that she'd let him come home, she'd let him resume being a father to their children. He had to; that was the only way he managed to attack one of the colonists that shot him, and fed on his blood. The transition was complete; Riley had become a vampire.
He stayed with Dorian for another year as he adjusted to the changes that came with being a vampire. The thing about Riley though, was that he didn't feed on humans. His conscience couldn't allow it. He fed off of animals, and really it was a good thing because it taught him how to control his bloodlust at an early fledgling stage. When the war ended, Riley managed to sneak onto a boat and remained below deck in the cargo to go back to England. Unfortunately, he didn't get the welcome he'd hoped for.
Riley sent a note to Jane, under the guise of being someone in town who wanted to offer his services to help her out on the property. He arranged to meet with her after sunset at the edge of the property. When Jane came and saw him, she collapsed to her knees and wept. Riley did the same and held her in his arms. He apologized to her, she pleaded with him that she thought he'd died, he told her he did die, she didn't understand. It was when she drew back that she saw the blood colored tears streaming down his face and she knew then what he was. Jane had a panic attack. She hit him, pushed him back, and put distance between them. Riley tried to assure her that he wasn't going to hurt her or their children, that he wanted to come home. Jane denied him. She screamed that he was cursed and never wanted to see him again. She told him she wished he truly had died, and that she was sorry she'd mourned for a demon. Devastated, she ran from him back into the house where Riley couldn't follow.
Broken, Riley had nowhere to go. After seeing Jane's reaction, he knew he couldn't turn to his family. Still, he found a way to stay close by seeking refuge in town. He'd wait all day inside, then come out at night to feed off whatever animals he could find, and watch from a distance through the windows of his house to see his children playing. That was how he discovered that his middle daughter, Maggie, had fallen terribly ill. She'd spiked a fever that wouldn't go down, and being only a young child of ten, she was quickly succumbing to it. One night when Jane was taking out sheets to boil and sterilize, Riley came to her and begged to be able to see Maggie. Jane screamed and started to run but Riley caught her. He begged her, pleaded with her, told her his blood could cure her and save her life. But Jane said she would rather their daughter become an angel in heaven than burn in hell for drinking a demon's blood. She ran from him back into the house where Riley was helpless to watch his daughter's life slip away. Maggie passed that night, and Riley was close enough to hear her heart's last beat.
The following morning, Riley almost committed suicide. He stayed outside the house until the sun started to come up, but ultimately went back into hiding. He resolved himself to the idea that he'd never see his family again, but he wanted to see his other children grow. He sent Jane money whenever he could get his hands on it. What she did with it, he never knew because he never spoke to her again after the night Maggie died. Jane married again a few years later, and their financial troubles ceased. Their remaining children grew up and had children of their own.
Riley kept tabs on them, on his grand children and great grand children. Having to watch his wife grow old and die from afar was awful, but not nearly as heartbreaking as watching the same for his children. They passed away thinking their father died in the war, when really he'd always been in the same city as them just unable to talk to them. He never met his grand children, or his great grand children, but he watched them grow up too. He watched them struggle, he watched them succeed, he watched everything but could never be part of their lives. Eventually he left England, and went back to America. He sought out his Sire, Dorian, and took refuge with him for many more years even though he was bitter toward him. So many times Riley wished he could just die and put himself in positions to meet his Final Death, but he always backed out because so long as he had this life, he could remember his children. He could read his journals and look at their picture. In Hell, he wouldn't be able to do that.
Though he lived for many decades in solitude only with Dorian, Riley did eventually venture out into the world of vampires to try to find some sort way to ease his suffering and depression. He made the exception to his rule about only feeding on animals by partaking in drinking blood from other vampires for pleasure, having sex whenever he wanted with whomever he wanted. And sometimes, that was all he had to keep a grip on his sanity. Sometimes depression would hit him so hard that he wouldn't move out of the dark for days at a time. Dorian had suggested he find a mate, but Riley was convinced Thomas had been that person he was meant to be with and there was no chance he'd ever find someone like that again.
As time passed, Riley found that he liked interacting with humans. The problem was, he couldn't really do that very well not being able to be out in the daylight. Still, he worked overnight jobs in the human world by glamouring whoever he had to in order to compel them to give him work without needing references or anything else. It allowed him to work wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted. That was the only time he used his glamour ability. He'd never do it to make a person offer their blood to him. Time had him traveling the United States, which underwent major changes over the course of his long life. He parted ways with his Sire, though never really severed contact. The last he saw of Dorian was in the 1990's, and he was going off to live in Italy for a while. One of the biggest changes that came to pass was how much more common the supernatural had become. Vampires, werewolves, merpeople, mediums, and others were more well known. Not necessarily accepted by all, but it wasn't a secret that they existed. It wasn't as radical as it'd been in the 1700's.
Riley found himself down south, and is currently living in Florida and working as a bartender at Le Pur Sang. He's been there for about eight years now, and has no intention of going anywhere for the time being. He still has his moments of darkness; those are likely never going to go away. His depression is a constant struggle, but he deals with it. Otherwise, he's charming and one of the favorite bartenders on the property. He lives in the Casaluna apartments, where his home is filled with books and journals. When he was a human, Riley had always wanted to be a writer, but that never worked out for him. It never stopped him from writing though, which he does everyday. His only keepsakes from his human life are what few journals he was able to get from when Jane threw them out, a few letters from Jane about the children while he was at war, and a very faded, tattered photograph of his children. He used to carry the photo around with him all the time but it's so worn that he has to keep it pressed in a book out of fear it will become too damaged.
WANTED LINES MATE CLOSED / Riley meets his true mate / ~lucass Steve Lucas / Chris Evans Riley and Steve meet, connect, are drawn to each other in ways that they can't deny or control. Emotional struggles, species difficulty, etc, ensue. Riley develops familial bonds with Steve's children.
COVEN OPEN / Allies, friends, frenemies / Any vampires Riley is mostly a solitary vampire, however, I would not be opposed to any other vampires for him to align with as a coven to keep a look out for each other. Friends would be good. Frenemies would be interesting. Contact me if interested.
OTHER SPECIES RELATIONSHIPS OPEN / Allies, friends, frenemies / Any other characters Riley doesn't discriminate between species. Forming relationships with others, be they werewolves, demons, angels, etc, would be something he is open to. He's a bartender; he's very easy to talk to and a very good listener.
